If you’re curious about the new Yaesu FTX-1 field radio and how it compares to the Icom IC-705, Scott (KK4Z) has been doing a deep-dive series over on his blog. So far, he’s taken a look at form factor, connectivity, and power requirements, but he will add more.
You can check out all of Scott’s FTX-1 posts here: https://kk4z.com/.
Highly recommended reading if you’re considering either rig for the field!
Scott’s comparison was informative. Perhaps before long there is a review of the FTX-1 or a similar comparison by K4SWL, especially as relates to receiver performance.
I have both and in my opinion, the ftx-1 has a slight edge in terms of receiver performance.
When you compare the receivers, both perform incredibly well, but have slightly different audio profiles. Yeasu tends to be more rounded in sound whereas the icom is crisper.
Do I think that the slight edge in receiver performance is worth the extra $150? Not really.
Thank you. I know that size, features and appearance are important, but it’s great to get some comments on performance too.
I like the way Scott is doing this series of comparisons. It’s very clear that he is actually using the radios and not something silly like comparing brochures. It’s exactly the type of thing that I would be interested in, and he explains his methodology as well as what he is using these fine radios for.
I appreciate the info; my primary interest is SSB and CW. I’m an old dog, and not into digital… unless it’s CW. I thank you for your previous posts, but I’m NOT an icom guy. Tooooo many bad experiences! I still love my ” tricked ” out FT-817ND. It has both CW + SSB Collins Mechanical filters installed by the now defunct W4RT Company in Huntsville. I also had them install the internal BHI DSP module. It’s a great rig, but we will see if looks like I may upgrade to the newer model!
Thanks again.
